WOODBLOCK PRINTING WORKSHOP

08/28/2014
Conducted by Reconnectivist artist Elspeth McEachern

Step back in time and learn one of the oldest forms of printmaking – woodblock (woodcut) printing. This printing method was first used by the ancient Egyptians, Indians and Arabs to stamp designs onto fabric. It was then adopted by China in 7th century AD to combine text and drawing on the same block. Woodblock printing on paper didn’t emerge in Europe until the 14th century AD; 100 years after the introduction of paper.

“Reconnect with nature through the ancient art of woodblock printing”
Printmaking workshop

In this course you will learn the steps involved in the ancient art of woodblock printing and complete your own original work of art.

Schedule

Week 1

Wednesday 24 September 2014 from 1.30pm to 3.30pm

In this session you will learn how to finalise the design for a print, transfer it to a woodblock, and following a demonstration in woodcarving techniques, begin to carve your wood. You will need to be committed to finishing the woodcarving at home before the next session.

PREPARATION: Please come to this first workshop prepared with an idea for a woodblock print based on the theme of “nature” (eg flowers, leaves, tree, animal or bird). During the workshop you will learn how to adapt this idea to suite a woodblock print (help will be provided for beginners in art). The design size will be 150mmW x 145mmH. Please allow a 6-10mm surrounding border in your design.

Week 2

Wednesday 1 October 2014 from 1.30pm to 3.30pm

In this workshop you will be shown how to correct any carving mistakes that may have resulted during the carving process. You will then go straight into printing your woodblock (edition of 4 prints).

[Please note the ink used is oil-based and therefore turpentine is used for cleaning. Fumes and staining are inevitable, so please wear old clothes and bring a face mask or gloves if you have an allergy].

PREPARATION: Please remember to bring your finished woodblock and carving tools to this session. Also please bring a large desert spoon or soup spoon as this is used as a burnisher (to rub the back of the paper).

Week 3

Wednesday 8 October 2014 from 1.30pm to 3.30pm

In this session, you will learn how to hand-paint your woodblock print using watercolour paint. Each print will be on watercolour paper, so the technique will be much like watercolour painting. You will be shown two techniques to choose from; either the transparent mixed colour layer technique or a more opaque (solid) single colour approach.

Cost

RM20 per session (for 3 weeks) plus RM18 for materials TOTAL COST: RM78
